1Now when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people assembled about Aaron and said to him, 'Come, make us a god who will go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.'
1百姓見摩西遲延不下山，就大家聚集到亞倫那裡，對他說：起來！為我們做神像，可以在我們前面引路；因為領我們出埃及地的那個摩西，我們不知道他遭了甚麼事。
2Aaron said to them, 'Tear off the gold rings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring [them] to me.'
2亞倫對他們說：你們去摘下你們妻子、兒女耳上的金環，拿來給我。
3Then all the people tore off the gold rings which were in their ears and brought [them] to Aaron.
3百姓就都摘下他們耳上的金環，拿來給亞倫。
4He took [this] from their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool and made it into a molten calf; and they said, 'This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.'
4亞倫從他們手裡接過來，鑄了一隻牛犢，用雕刻的器具做成。他們就說：以色列阿，這是領你出埃及地的神。
5Now when Aaron saw [this], he built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation and said, 'Tomorrow [shall be] a feast to the LORD.'
5亞倫看見，就在牛犢面前築壇，且宣告說：明日要向耶和華守節。
6So the next day they rose early and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
6次日清早，百姓起來獻燔祭和平安祭，就坐下吃喝，起來玩耍。
7Then the LORD spoke to Moses, 'Go down at once, for your people, whom you brought up from the land of Egypt, have corrupted [themselves].
7耶和華吩咐摩西說：下去罷，因為你的百姓，就是你從埃及地領出來的，已經敗壞了。
8'They have quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them. They have made for themselves a molten calf, and have worshiped it and have sacrificed to it and said, 'This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt!''
8他們快快偏離了我所吩咐的道，為自己鑄了一隻牛犢，向他下拜獻祭，說：以色列阿，這就是領你出埃及地的神。
9The LORD said to Moses, 'I have seen this people, and behold, they are an obstinate people.
9耶和華對摩西說：我看這百姓真是硬著頸項的百姓。
10'Now then let Me alone, that My anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them; and I will make of you a great nation.'
10你且由著我，我要向他們發烈怒，將他們滅絕，使你的後裔成為大國。
11Then Moses entreated the LORD his God, and said, 'O LORD, why does Your anger burn against Your people whom You have brought out from the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?
11摩西便懇求耶和華─他的神說：耶和華阿，你為甚麼向你的百姓發烈怒呢？這百姓是你用大力和大能的手從埃及地領出來的。
12'Why should the Egyptians speak, saying, 'With evil [intent] He brought them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the face of the earth '? Turn from Your burning anger and change Your mind about [doing] harm to Your people.
12為甚麼使埃及人議論說他領他們出去，是要降禍與他們，把他們殺在山中，將他們從地上除滅？求你轉意，不發你的烈怒，後悔，不降禍與你的百姓。
13'Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants to whom You swore by Yourself, and said to them, 'I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heavens, and all this land of which I have spoken I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit [it] forever.''
13求你記念你的僕人亞伯拉罕、以撒、以色列。你曾指著自己起誓說：我必使你們的後裔像天上的星那樣多，並且我所應許的這全地，必給你們的後裔，他們要永遠承受為業。
14So the LORD changed His mind about the harm which He said He would do to His people.
14於是耶和華後悔，不把所說的禍降與他的百姓。
15Then Moses turned and went down from the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, tablets which were written on both sides; they were written on one [side] and the other.
15摩西轉身下山，手裡拿著兩塊法版。這版是兩面寫的，這面那面都有字，
16The tablets were God's work, and the writing was God's writing engraved on the tablets.
16是神的工作，字是 神寫的，刻在版上。
17Now when Joshua heard the sound of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, 'There is a sound of war in the camp.'
17約書亞一聽見百姓呼喊的聲音，就對摩西說：在營裡有爭戰的聲音。
18But he said, 'It is not the sound of the cry of triumph, Nor is it the sound of the cry of defeat; But the sound of singing I hear.'
18摩西說：這不是人打勝仗的聲音，也不是人打敗仗的聲音，我所聽見的乃是人歌唱的聲音。
19It came about, as soon as Moses came near the camp, that he saw the calf and [the] dancing; and Moses' anger burned, and he threw the tablets from his hands and shattered them at the foot of the mountain.
19摩西挨近營前就看見牛犢，又看見人跳舞，便發烈怒，把兩塊版扔在山下摔碎了，
20He took the calf which they had made and burned [it] with fire, and ground it to powder, and scattered it over the surface of the water and made the sons of Israel drink [it].
20又將他們所鑄的牛犢用火焚燒，磨得粉碎，撒在水面上，叫以色列人喝。
21Then Moses said to Aaron, 'What did this people do to you, that you have brought [such] great sin upon them?'
21摩西對亞倫說：這百姓向你做了甚麼？你竟使他們陷在大罪裡！
22Aaron said, 'Do not let the anger of my lord burn; you know the people yourself, that they are prone to evil.
22亞倫說：求我主不要發烈怒。這百姓專於作惡，是你知道的。
23'For they said to me, 'Make a god for us who will go before us; for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.'
23他們對我說：你為我們做神像，可以在我們前面引路；因為領我們出埃及地的那個摩西，我們不知道他遭了甚麼事。
24'I said to them, 'Whoever has any gold, let them tear it off.' So they gave [it] to me, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf.'
24我對他們說：凡有金環的可以摘下來，他們就給了我。我把金環扔在火中，這牛犢便出來了。
25Now when Moses saw that the people were out of control-- for Aaron had let them get out of control to be a derision among their enemies--
25摩西見百姓放肆（亞倫縱容他們，使他們在仇敵中間被譏刺），
26then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, 'Whoever is for the LORD, [come] to me!' And all the sons of Levi gathered together to him.
26就站在營門中，說：凡屬耶和華的，都要到我這裡來！於是利未的子孫都到他那裡聚集。
27He said to them, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Every man [of you] put his sword upon his thigh, and go back and forth from gate to gate in the camp, and kill every man his brother, and every man his friend, and every man his neighbor.''
27他對他們說：耶和華─以色列的神這樣說：你們各人把刀跨在腰間，在營中往來，從這門到那門，各人殺他的弟兄與同伴並鄰舍。
28So the sons of Levi did as Moses instructed, and about three thousand men of the people fell that day.
28利未的子孫照摩西的話行了。那一天百姓中被殺的約有三千。
29Then Moses said, 'Dedicate yourselves today to the LORD-- for every man has been against his son and against his brother-- in order that He may bestow a blessing upon you today.'
29摩西說：今天你們要自潔，歸耶和華為聖，各人攻擊他的兒子和弟兄，使耶和華賜福與你們。
30On the next day Moses said to the people, 'You yourselves have committed a great sin; and now I am going up to the LORD, perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.'
30到了第二天，摩西對百姓說：你們犯了大罪。我如今要上耶和華那裡去，或者可以為你們贖罪。
31Then Moses returned to the LORD, and said, 'Alas, this people has committed a great sin, and they have made a god of gold for themselves.
31摩西回到耶和華那裡，說：唉！這百姓犯了大罪，為自己做了金像。
32'But now, if You will, forgive their sin-- and if not, please blot me out from Your book which You have written!'
32倘或你肯赦免他們的罪……不然，求你從你所寫的冊上塗抹我的名。
33The LORD said to Moses, 'Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.
33耶和華對摩西說：誰得罪我，我就從我的冊上塗抹誰的名。
34'But go now, lead the people where I told you. Behold, My angel shall go before you; nevertheless in the day when I punish, I will punish them for their sin.'
34現在你去領這百姓，往我所告訴你的地方去，我的使者必在你前面引路；只是到我追討的日子，我必追討他們的罪。
35Then the LORD smote the people, because of what they did with the calf which Aaron had made.
35耶和華殺百姓的緣故是因他們同亞倫做了牛犢。
